Richard qualified from the London Hospital in 1982 and following a two year period as an associate he started the Hadleigh Dental Surgery which he ran for 23 years. Following the growth in referrals, he built the state of the art Colchester Dental Referral Centre to provide for referring practitioners and their patients' needs.

He completed a Master of Science degree in Endodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute for Oral Healthcare Sciences, University of London in September 2001. Together with his postgraduate training this gives him the experience particularly suited to appreciate the problems of diagnosis, treatment planning and case management often associated with teeth that require endodontic treatment.

He regularly teaches on courses for dentist throughout East Anglia.
